Bags of Oranges for your Immunity

With the colder months approaching and viruses looking for willing hosts, it might be worthwhile taking a look at the possibility that eating bags of oranges is not your only hope!

More and more research is being done into the field of emotions and how it affects our bodies and physical health. Some medical doctors are nowadays willing to say that ‘some’ of our physical symptoms are caused by stress. However, others are of the opinion that more than 85% of our illnesses are caused by unresolved emotions.

 

Depending on your current point of view, the following might be really surprising – or just confirming something you believe but had no proof for. Recent research has proven that the stress associated with marital strife has a marked effect on the healing of wounds! (And also on the condition of our immune system and therefore our bodies’ ability to fight disease)

 

Fascinating research results

 

The researchers (at the Ohio State University College of Medicine) created small suction blisters on the skin of married test subjects, after which each couple was instructed to have a neutral discussion for half an hour. For the next 3 weeks, the researchers then monitored the production of the proteins that our bodies produce in association with wound healing. They then instructed the same couples to discuss a topic on which they disagreed. Research staff was present during both the neutral discussion and the disagreement.

 

The researchers found that the expression of these healing-linked proteins was depressed in those couples who had a fight. Even those couples who had a simple discussion of a disagreement, rather than a full-fledged verbal battle, showed slower healing of their wounds. But in couples who had severe disagreements, laced with put-downs, sarcasm, and criticism, wound healing was slowed by some 40%. They also produced smaller quantities of the three proteins. How does it affect me?

 

This research was done on marital couples but the effects are the same whether you argue with your kids, a colleague, your boss or the guy who looks after your car in the parking lot.  Especially if you’re thinking of going for surgery of any kind, or have an injury – it’s definitely best to avoid conflict.

 

Not only verbal conflict will have this effect – think of how many times a day you feel stressed or worried about conditions around you, the news (even just reading a news headline), rising food prices, rising interest rates. Doctor Candice Pert (Neuroscientist) tells us that “the molecules of our emotions share intimate connections with, and are indeed inseparable from, our physiology…”

 

Is there a solution?

 

What if you can’t avoid conflict? We live in a real world after all, where not everybody agrees with us, where things go wrong and we have daily upsets and fears. We probably feel less in control than ever before. So many things seem to go wrong, so many conditions seem out of our control. We’re not taught any life skills to help us, while we’re expected to just ‘deal with it’.
